Grading Scale
Second graders will receive numerical grades on midterms and report cards. We will begin discussing letter grades and percentages this year, in order for students to be ready for letter grades in third grade. The table below can serve as a reference for what our numerical grades mean.
HomeworkResearch has shown that the most important thing parents can do to support their child’s education in elementary is to read at home. Second grade students should try reading a minimum of 20 minutes every school night. This could include reading books to themselves silently or out loud, or having someone read to them. Spelling words will be stapled into planners and you may study these at your discretion. Students may also bring home a math practice page on occasion if extra practice is needed. With a busy family of my own, I understand that we all have nights where we can't fit in extra time for homework so you child will never be punished for not completing work.
**Homework will be recorded in planners so check there if you are unsure what the assignment was.** |
PlannersStudent planners will be an important form of communication for us. Each day, your child will write any homework assignment or important reminders in his or her planner. There will also be a spelling list/word pattern sheet stapled in each Monday. Leave it there for the week so your child can refer to it. Because the planner is such an important form of communication between home and school, I would like you to sign or initial it each day when your child completes his or her homework to acknowledge that you have seen your child’s planner and that you are aware of any homework. This is also a great place to jot any notes or changes in after-school transportation as I will check planners EVERY morning.

Transportation
At the beginning of the year, I will have you fill out a form letting me know how your child is to go home after school. If there are any weekly schedules to follow, for example bus on Mondays-Thursdays but car rider on Fridays, this is the time to let me know. Once I have this information, I make a poster so there are no questions as to how each child goes home. For safety reasons, if there are any deviations from this original schedule, I MUST receive a note in the planner, email, or phone call before I will let your child deter from the original schedule. This is purely for safety reasons as I have had students in the past confuse their schedule and arrive at an empty house…no good!! If you quickly write “car”, “walk”, or “bus” in the planner for the day, I can ensure your child will arrive safely at his or her destination.
